Born 26 October 1985 in India, she trained in Bharatanatyam dance before making her acting debut at 15 in the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001). Her first commercial success came with the Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi in 2003, for which she won a Filmfare Best Telugu Actress Award.
M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi (2004) marked her Tamil cinema debut and became a huge success. She cemented her status with a critically acclaimed performance in Ghajini (2005), winning the Filmfare Best Tamil Actress Award, and followed with action roles in Sivakasi (2005), Varalaru (2006), Pokkiri (2007), Vel (2008), and Dasavathaaram (2008).
