Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman. Born September 4, 1981, she rose to fame in the late 1990s as lead singer of Destiny's Child, one of the best-selling girl groups in history. Her debut solo album *Dangerously in Love* (2003) became one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century. After Destiny's Child disbanded in 2005, she released the funk-imbued *B'Day* (2006), starred in the drama film *Dreamgirls* (2006), and married rapper Jay-Z. Her 2008 work—the pop-oriented double album *I Am... Sasha Fierce* and the biopic *Cadillac Records*, in which she portrayed Etta James—cemented her cross-genre reach.

Through the 2000s, Beyoncé dominated the US Billboard Hot 100 with number-one singles including "Crazy in Love," "Baby Boy," "Check on It," "Irreplaceable," and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". After founding Parkwood Entertainment, she embraced traditional R&B and soul on *4* (2011).
