Biography
Common (Lonnie Rashid Lynn) is an American rapper, actor, and activist born March 13, 1972. He signed to Relativity Records at 20 and released his first three albums—Can I Borrow a Dollar? (1992), Resurrection (1994), and One Day It'll All Make Sense (1997)—before gaining mainstream traction through the Black music collective Soulquarians. His collaboration with Erykah Badu on "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)" became his highest Billboard Hot 100 entry (number nine) and won Best R&B Song at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards.
After joining Kanye West's GOOD Music, Common released Be (2005) and Finding Forever (2007), both nominated for Best Rap Album Grammys; the latter debuted atop the Billboard 200 and featured "Southside" (with West), which won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. He founded his label imprint Think Common Entertainment in 2011 and continued releasing albums across multiple labels, including Black America Again (2016), which received widespread critical acclaim. His film work spans Smokin' Aces (2006), American Gangster (2007), and a co-starring role as James Bevel in Selma (2014), for which he and John Legend's song "Glory" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. On television, he starred in AMC's Hell on Wheels (2011–2014) and joined Apple TV+'s Silo from 2023. His song "Letter to the Free" for Ava DuVernay's Netflix documentary 13th (2017) earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, and he made his Broadway debut in Between Riverside and Crazy (2023), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. As a Pisces and life-path 8, Common embodies the number's drive toward authority and material mastery paired with the sign's compassion and visionary depth.
