Cynthia Erivo is a British actress and singer whose stage work launched her into film and television prominence. Born January 8, 1987 in the UK, she made her West End debut in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (2011), followed by her Broadway debut as Celie in The Color Purple (2015–2017). That role earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, along with a Daytime Emmy Award.
Erivo's film career began in 2018 with crime thrillers Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. She received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for her roles as Harriet Tubman in Harriet (2019) and as Elphaba in Wicked (2024), and a Best Original Song nomination for "Stand Up" from Harriet. Her reprisal of Elphaba in Wicked: For Good (2025) made her the first Black actress nominated twice for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards. On television, she portrayed Holly Gibney in the HBO crime drama miniseries The Outsider (2020) and Aretha Franklin in National Geographic's Genius: Aretha (2021), earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for the latter.
