He wrote most of the music and lyrics for A Very Potter Musical, where he played the lead role of Harry Potter, and later appeared on Broadway as a replacement in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In March 2017, Criss debuted Computer Games, an indie pop band, alongside his brother Chuck. His career shifted dramatically with Ryan Murphy's The Assassination of Gianni Versace (2018), where Criss's portrayal of spree killer Andrew Cunanan earned him both a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries, or Television Film.
