Eli Kent is a New Zealand playwright and actor born in 1988. He holds a master's in scriptwriting from Victoria University of Wellington's International Institute of Modern Letters. Kent's theatrical career began in Wellington, where he co-led the Shakespear Society with fellow actors Uther Dean and Jake Reilly-Davis—productions included The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Richard III (in which Kent played the title role), and The Tempest, which Kent directed alongside Philly-Jason-Smith. His early play Rubber Turkey gained regional attention, but Kent achieved national recognition when The Intricate Art of Actually Caring premiered at the 2009 Wellington Fringe Festival, earning multiple Fringe and Chapman Tripp awards, including The Chapman Tripp Award for best new New Zealand play. He subsequently made his Auckland Theatre Company debut with Black Confetti. As a screenwriter, Kent collaborated with co-writer James Ashcroft on the films Millies Lies are Low (2021) and Coming Home in the Dark (2022). In 2024, Kent and Ashcroft released The Rule of Jenny Pen, which starred John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush and was praised by Stephen King as "one of the best movies I've seen this year".
