Emil Karlsen is a Norwegian-Sámi singer, actor, and songwriter born in 1997. He was vocalist and guitarist in the pop-rock band Resirkulert and performs solo as Emil Kárlsen. Emil Ráste Nikolavu Karlsen is a Norwegian-Sámi singer, actor, songwriter, and musician from Storfjord, Troms, born in 1997. He served as vocalist and guitarist in the pop-rock band Resirkulert and maintains a solo career under the stage name Emil Kárlsen. Karlsen is Sea Sámi (Coastal Sámi) and grew up in Oteren in Storfjord municipality, where he learned joik in his youth. In 2018, he released a joik for his father-in-law and performed it at the Nordlysfestivalen. He was elected Riddu Riđđu Young Artist in 2019.
In 2021, Karlsen released the album Nágirvárri alongside artist Lávre, featuring contributions from other Sámi musicians including Katarina Barruk, Ulla Pirttijärvi, and Hildá Länsman. That same year, he made his acting debut playing Jussi in Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter's production of Koke Bjørn, adapted from Mikael Niemi's book. In 2023, he took the lead role in the piece Bjørnegegeren Ol-Tomså, also produced by Beaivváš. In 2024, Karlsen participated in Pan-ArcticVision in Nuuk, Greenland, and won the public vote award for 'The Song that gives the most feeling of Community and Togetherness'. As a male performer and musician, Karlsen works across music and theatre, grounded in Sámi cultural traditions.
