Gaya Jiji is a Syrian filmmaker and screenwriter based in Paris. Born in Damascus in 1979, she studied at Paris 8 University Vincennes-Saint-Denis, earning a master's degree. Her feature film debut, My Favourite Fabric, premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in the Un certain regard section. The film explores female sexuality and self-expression through the story of Nahla, played by Manal Issa, a woman rejected by a potential husband who seeks refuge in a brothel in 2011 Damascus. At the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Jiji received the Women in Motion Young Talent Award, recognizing emerging female talent in cinema. She is currently developing a second feature film, The Stranger. As a screenwriter and director, she works across narrative film and visual storytelling. Jiji's career reflects a commitment to centering women's perspectives and experiences in contemporary cinema.
