Gregory James Qaiyum, known as GQ, is an American actor, writer, and rapper born February 6, 1976. The son of a German and English mother and a Pakistani father, he grew up in Chicago and studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he developed his signature fusion of hip-hop and theater. Before graduating from the Experimental Theatre Wing, he created The Bomb-itty of Errors—a project that merged his two passions, rapping and acting—serving as actor, rapper, co-writer, and original producer. The show earned the jury prize for Best Show at the 2001 Aspen Comedy Festival.
GQ's professional acting career began at Manhattan Theatre Club in the London play East is East. He appeared in films including What's the Worst That Could Happen?, On the Line, Drumline, and Taxi. Television work followed: he created, wrote, and starred in MTV's Scratch & Burn, a musical sketch-comedy series developed with his younger brother JAQ and the Bomb-itty crew. He made his directorial debut with Just Another Story for Showtime, which he also wrote and starred in. GQ guest-starred on Fox's Boston Public, writing his own rap verses for a delinquent student character in a Shakespeare class. In 2012, with JAQ, he debuted Othello: The Remix, a 90-minute hip-hop adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello for the Globe to Globe Festival and World Shakespeare Festival. An Aquarius born in winter, GQ channels inventive, boundary-crossing energy into his work. As an actor, he performs across stage, film, and television, bringing multidisciplinary skill to drama and music. He and JAQ co-founded Q Brothers Productions and are developing The Feel Good Album Of The Year, blending jazz, rock, R&B, and electronica.
