Jake Gyllenhaal is an American actor born December 19, 1980, into one of cinema's most prominent families. His parents—director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner—shaped his early career; his sister Maggie is also an actress. He began acting as a child in City Slickers (1991) and appeared in his father's films A Dangerous Woman (1993) and Homegrown (1998) before his breakthrough as Homer Hickam in the biopic October Sky (1999).
