Jennifer Makumbi is a Ugandan-British novelist and short story writer. Born in the 1960s, she studied and wrote her doctoral novel, The Kintu Saga, which won the Kwani? Manuscript Project in 2013 and was published by Kwani Trust in 2014 under the title Kintu. Her short story collection Manchester Happened came out in 2019. Makumbi's story "Let's Tell This Story Properly" made her Regional Winner for Africa in the 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize—and she emerged Overall Winner of that prize the same year. She was longlisted for the 2014 Etisalat Prize for Literature, awarded a Windham-Campbell Prize in the fiction category in 2019, and won the Jhalak Prize in 2021 with her novel The First Woman. As a writer, she balances creative practice with teaching: Makumbi is a lecturer in Creative Writing at Lancaster University and lives in Manchester with her husband, Damian, and son, Jordan.
