John Legend, born John Roger Stephens on December 28, 1978, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and record producer. He started his career working behind the scenes, playing piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and contributing uncredited vocals to Jay-Z's "Encore" and Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name".
He was the first artist to sign with Kanye West's GOOD Music label, releasing his debut album Get Lifted (2004), which reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and earned double platinum certification. At the 48th Annual Grammy Awards, "Ordinary People" won Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Get Lifted won Best R&B Album, and Legend himself won Best New Artist. His second and third albums, Once Again (2006) and Evolver (2008), continued his upward trajectory; Evolver's "Green Light" (featuring André 3000) peaked in the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 and received double platinum certification.
His fourth album Love in the Future (2013) featured "All of Me," a pop ballad that became his biggest commercial success—peaking atop the Billboard Hot 100, spending 23 consecutive weeks in the top ten, and earning diamond (14× platinum) certification. In 2015, he co-performed with Meghan Trainor on "Like I'm Gonna Lose You," which peaked at number seven.
