He wrote for the ITV animated Mr. Bean adaptation. His novels—Seeds of Greatness (2006), A Short Gentleman (2008), and Worth (2011)—blend comedy with reflection on his upbringing; A Short Gentleman was adapted for BBC Radio 4 in 2012. Since 2008 he has contributed regularly to The Guardian's opinion section. In 2014 he co-wrote The Rev. Diaries with Tom Hollander and James Wood, based on the TV series.
