★ FEATURE
Joshua Wong Chi-fung is a Hong Kong activist and politician born on 13 October 1996. He founded and served as convenor of Scholarism, a student activist group, before becoming secretary-general of the pro-democracy party Demosistō, which disbanded following the implementation of Hong Kong's national security law on 30 June 2020.
Wong first achieved international prominence during the 2014 Hong Kong protests, where his pivotal role in the Umbrella Movement led to his inclusion in Time magazine's Most Influential Teens of 2014 and a nomination for its 2014 Person of the Year. In 2015, Fortune magazine named him one of the "world's greatest leaders".
His activism has drawn repeated legal consequences: in August 2017, he and two other democracy activists were convicted and jailed for their roles in the occupation of Civic Square during the 2014 Occupy Central protests. In January 2018, he faced another conviction and jail sentence for failing to comply with a court order regarding clearance of the Mong Kok protest site. In December 2020, Wong was convicted and jailed for more than a year over an unauthorised protest outside police headquarters in June 2019. A 2024 national security trial resulted in a jail sentence of 4 years and 8 months for subversion. He also played a major role in lobbying U.S. members of Congress to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act during the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests. As a politician, he has faced disqualification from elections: the Hong Kong government barred him from running in District Council elections, and his nomination for a Legislative Council seat in 2020 was invalidated on 30 July 2020 along with those of 11 other pro-democracy figures.
