Kim Jong-hyun (Korean: 김종현) was a South Korean singer-songwriter, record producer, radio host, and author born April 8, 1990, in South Korea. Known mononymously as Jonghyun, he spent nine years as the vocalist of Shinee, the boy band under SM Entertainment, releasing twelve albums in Korean and Japanese. He also participated in SM the Ballad, a project group within the label, for two EP releases.
Jonghyun launched his solo career in January 2015 with the EP Base, which debuted at number one on both the Billboard World Albums Chart and the Gaon Album Chart. He released the compilation album Story Op.1 in September 2015, followed by his debut studio album She Is on May 24, 2016, and a second compilation, Story Op.2, on April 24, 2017. His first solo concert tour, The Story by Jonghyun, began October 2, 2015, and expanded into three additional tours. Critics praised him as one of South Korea's finest vocalists, with particular recognition for his artistic control and direct involvement in music creation.
Jonghyun remained active across both Shinee and solo work until his death on December 18, 2017. His final studio album, Poet | Artist, was released posthumously on January 23, 2018, with all profits directed to his mother and a newly established charity foundation.
