Biography
Lane Tietgen was an American poet, composer, and musician born in Topeka, Kansas. He sang and played guitar and bass, living in the Bay Area in California. Tietgen began his musical career as guitarist and primary songwriter for The Serfs, a blues-rock band active in Kansas. In 1970, the blues-jazz-rock band The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood recorded seven of his compositions, including "Captain Bobby Stout," "Early Bird Cafe," and "Martha's Madman". His songwriting reached a broader audience when his compositions were covered by major artists: Manfred Mann's Earth Band recorded "Captain Bobby Stout" and "Martha's Madman," John Mellencamp covered "Early Bird Cafe," Dave Mason recorded "It Can't Make Any Difference to Me," and Ringo Starr recorded "Red and Black Blues". In 2006, Ice Cube sampled a Tietgen melody for "Click, Clack – Get Back!" on the album Laugh Now, Cry Later. In 2009, The Serfs were inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame, and that same year Tietgen released a solo album, Wheels of Fortune, featuring all original songs. He regularly performed live as a folk singer and guitarist in music venues. Tietgen died on 14 July 2020, as reported in the Sonoma News.
