Lily Madigan is a British activist and politician born on 16 January 1998. She made history as the first openly trans woman to hold the position of Constituency Labour Party Women's Officer, elected in November 2017 by the Labour Party in Rochester and Strood. In 2019, she was elected national women's officer for Labour Students.
Madigan's election sparked significant internal controversy within the Labour Party. A complaint she filed alleging transphobia against women's officer Anne Ruzylo was not upheld, but Ruzylo subsequently stepped down. Following her election and around the time of her application to the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme, five critical articles about her were published in The Times; she was rejected from the programme, but 55 activists involved condemned the articles and praised Labour for supporting women's participation, with Labour MPs Rosie Duffield and Preet Gill among the signatories.
During her time at the University for the Creative Arts, Madigan ran both the LGBTQ+ liberation group and the women's liberation group, and served as Campus Executive Officer. In 2016, while at St Simon Stock Catholic School, she took legal action after the school required her to wear a male uniform, used her deadname, and denied her access to female toilets. In 2018, she was listed as one of Teen Vogue's "21 Under 21".
