Lucian Msamati is a British-Tanzanian actor, director, producer, and writer who carved a dual path across screen and stage. He entered mainstream recognition as Salladhor Saan in HBO's Game of Thrones, then followed with J.L.B. Matekoni in the BBC/HBO adaptation of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and David Runihura in the Netflix/BBC thriller Black Earth Rising. On television, he played Ed Dumani in the Sky/AMC series Gangs of London and Cardinal Adeyemi in Conclave, roles that confirmed his range in prestige drama. Theatrically, Msamati broke ground as the first Black actor to portray Iago at the Royal Shakespeare Company in a 2015 production of Othello. He has since anchored major National Theatre productions: Toledo in August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2016) and Antonio Salieri in the 2017–2018 revival of Amadeus. Earlier stage work included Arturo Ui in Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Lyric Hammersmith, 2008) and Kevin/Albert in Bruce Norris's Clybourne Park (Royal Court and West End, 2010–2011).
