Magnus Bakken is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist and composer born in Lillehammer in 1991. He plays primarily tenor and soprano saxophone, trained at Berklee College of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Music. Bakken released his debut album Cycles in 2015 as part of his master's studies, featuring pianist Jørn Øien, bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen, and drummer Jon Audun Baar. He led the fusion band Ninjabeat, which released two albums of his compositions. Since 2021, Bakken has been a member of bassist Ellen Brekken's quartet A Tonic for the Troops, alongside pianist Espen Berg and drummer Magnus Sefaniassen Eide. In 2024, he released the album Slackline, commissioned for DølaJazz 2022's opening concert, with Øien, bassist Bo Berg, and drummer Amund Kleppan. He has also collaborated with Italian trumpeter Cosimo Boni since 2024, releasing the album We Say with bassist Håkon Huldt-Nystrøm and drummer Kleppan. As a Scorpio born in November, Bakken embodies the sign's intensity and transformative drive in his compositional work. Composers create original music across genres and ensembles. His early recognition came in 2009, when at 17 he reached the Toneprisen finals, finishing second and winning the audience vote as the only non-classical finalist.

At age 17 in 2009, Magnus Bakken entered the Toneprisen competition for young solo musicians aged 16–23 from Hedmark and Oppland counties, organized by NRK. He was the only finalist performing a non-classical piece and finished second while winning the audience vote. This early recognition led him to pursue formal studies at Berklee College of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Music.
