Martin Kunert is an American screenwriter and film director born in 1974. He grew up in Westfield, New Jersey and attended the New York Military Academy before graduating from New York University's film school. As a screenwriter and director, he has created innovative content across television and film for over two decades. Kunert pioneered user-generated reality television when he created and executive produced MTV's Fear, the first reality show to have contestants film themselves. The show developed a distinctive visual and musical style that was widely imitated; each week, over 250 hours of contestant footage was edited into 45-minute episodes. MTV's Fear spawned TV specials, DVDs, and numerous copycat shows, including NBC's Fear Factor and VH1's Celebrity Paranormal Project. In 2004, he conceived and directed the documentary Voices of Iraq, which sent 150 DV cameras to Iraqis to film their own lives, earning MovieMaker Magazine's praise as "truly a groundbreaking film…both in terms of its content and the process behind its production". Kunert directed feature films including Campfire Tales for New Line Cinema and Rogue Force for Miramax, and wrote screenplays for major studios including Warner Bros., Paramount, and 20th Century Fox. In 2002, NBC/StudiosUSA signed him to an exclusive writing, directing, and producing contract. When Shanghai Media Group and Disney Pictures partnered on a 15-year co-production deal, Kunert was hired to create and write original franchises. He directed an experimental 3D film financed by DirecTV, Technicolor, and Panasonic in 2011. Since 2010, he has worked as a fashion photographer for high-luxury brands and prestigious magazines like Harper's Bazaar.
