Matthew Pateman is a British academic and writer born on 1 January 2000. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Leeds with a thesis focused on Julian Barnes's fiction. Pateman began his academic career as a postgraduate tutor at Leeds, then moved to the University of Hull's Scarborough unit in 1994, where he taught popular culture using Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a key text. He rose to Senior Lecturer in Culture and Media Studies at Hull before joining Kingston University in 2010. He subsequently taught at Sheffield Hallam University across English, TV, Film, Theory, and Drama, and currently holds a professorship at Edge Hill University. Beyond traditional academia, Pateman has served as the Gerard Manley Hopkins Lecturer at John Carroll University near Cleveland, Ohio, during the 2003–2004 academic year. His research interests remain diverse, encompassing modern literature, the films of Aryan Kaganof, and continued scholarship on Joss Whedon. He maintains involvement in student media through regular programming on Edgehog Radio.
