Nikhil Goyal is an American sociologist and writer born in 1995. His debut book, *Live to See the Day: Coming of Age in American Poverty*, documented three Puerto Rican children in Philadelphia's poorest neighborhoods across nearly a decade of ethnographic fieldwork, capturing their lives amid welfare reform, mass incarceration, and educational inequality. The New Yorker named it a Best Book of 2023; The Washington Post called it transformative; The New York Times praised Goyal as "a vivid writer" whose stories are "painful and viscerally frustrating". Beyond his book, Goyal has contributed essays to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and The Nation. He teaches sociology, specializing in education, poverty, incarceration, and social welfare. During the 117th and 118th Congressional sessions, he served as senior policy advisor on education and children for the Senate Committee on the Budget and Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions under Senator Bernie Sanders. Goyal holds a BA from Goddard College and earned both M.Phil and Ph.D from the University of Cambridge. He currently lives in Vermont.
