Richard Billingham turned his family's dysfunction into unflinching documentary art. Born 25 September 1970 in England, the photographer, filmmaker, and art teacher built a career documenting the West Midlands working-class life he grew up in. Ray's A Laugh (1996), his debut photobook, remains his defining work—a raw series capturing his alcoholic father Ray and obese, heavily tattooed mother Liz. He followed with Black Country (2003), Zoo (2007), and Landscapes, 2001–2003 (2008). Billingham also works in film: he made shorts including Fishtank (1998) and Ray (2016), then adapted the latter into his first feature, Ray & Liz (2018), a memoir of his childhood.
