Rupert Friend

Rupert Friend is a British actor and screenwriter born in 1981. He first gained recognition for The Libertine (2004) and Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (2005), roles that won him best-newcomer awards. He then portrayed George Wickham in Pride & Prejudice (2005), Lieutenant Kurt Kotler in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), and Albert, Prince Consort in The Young Victoria (2009)—a string of high-profile period roles that established him as a versatile dramatic actor.

In the 2010s, Friend extended his range into contemporary thrillers, playing psychologist Oliver Baumer in Starred Up (2013) and CIA operative Peter Quinn across five seasons of the political thriller Homeland (2012–2017). He appeared as Vasily Stalin in The Death of Stalin (2017), Theo van Gogh in At Eternity's Gate (2018), and Ernest Donovan in the period series Strange Angel (2018–2019).

Beginning in the early 2020s, Friend collaborated with director Wes Anderson, starting with a cameo in The French Dispatch (2021), then appearing in Asteroid City (2023) and the Netflix short films The Swan and The Rat Catcher (2024), plus the 2025 feature The Phoenician Scheme. In 2022, he played disgraced British politician James Whitehouse in Anatomy of a Scandal and portrayed the Grand Inquisitor in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Beyond acting, Friend is a screenwriter and director. He directed and wrote two award-winning short films: The Continuing and Lamentable Saga of the Suicide Brothers (2008) and Steve (2010). He also wrote lyrics for the Kairos 4Tet album Everything We Hold (2013). As an actor and screenwriter, Friend navigates both in-front-of and behind-the-camera storytelling.
