Tom Kaulitz co-founded Tokio Hotel in 2001 as guitarist alongside singer Bill Kaulitz, bassist Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer. The German pop rock band initially recorded a demo under the name "Devilish" before signing to Universal Music Germany and releasing their debut album Schrei in 2005. Schrei became a commercial success, selling over half a million copies worldwide and spawning four top-five singles in Germany and Austria. In 2007, Tokio Hotel released two albums: the German-language Zimmer 483 and their first English-language record Scream, which combined for over 2.5 million copies sold and earned the band their first MTV Europe Music Award for Best InterAct. Zimmer 483 produced three German top-five singles; Scream charted in France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. September 2008 marked a breakthrough: Tokio Hotel won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, becoming the first German band ever to win at the MTV VMAs. The group also claimed the MTV Europe Music Awards Headliner award in 2008 and Best Group in 2009, plus the Best World Stage Performance award in November 2010. By July 2011, they became the first German band to win at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan. The band has sold over 10 million records worldwide and shifted from pop rock and alternative rock toward electropop and synth-pop beginning in 2014. Their most recent album is 2001, released in 2022.
