Uglješa Šajtinac is a Serbian screenwriter, novelist, and playwright born on 1 October 1971. His mother, Gordana, is an actress at Novi Sad's National Theater; his father, Radivoj, writes cultural policy articles. He studied at Belgrade's Faculty of Dramatic Arts and graduated in 1999, then worked as a dramaturge at the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad from 2003 to 2005 before becoming a professor at the Academy of Arts of the University of Novi Sad. Šajtinac's play Huddersfield premiered in English at Leeds Playhouse in 2004—inspired after he visited the town in 2000—and won the Sterijina Award at Sterijino pozorje Festival in 2005; a Serbian performance followed at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre in 2005, and a German one at Volksbühne Berlin. He co-wrote the screenplay for the same-named film. His dramatized Robinson Crusoe adaptation was performed by Theatre Playground as Life On A Desert Island across New York City parks in 2009. In 2010, he co-authored the international play Danube Drama or Awful Coffee, Cheap Cigarettes with nine other playwrights, staged in Bratislava.
