Viktor Antonov built dystopian video game worlds that defined a generation of first-person shooters. Born 5 February 1972 in Bulgaria, Antonov worked as an artist, designer, writer, and worldbuilder across multiple studios, crafting the visual language of some of gaming's most celebrated environments.
His career began at Xatrix Entertainment with credits on Redneck Rampage (1997), Redneck Deer Huntin' (1998), Redneck Rampage Rides Again (1998), and Kingpin: Life of Crime (1999). At Valve, he served as art director on Counter-Strike: Source (2004), Half-Life 2 (2004), and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast (2005). His most iconic work came as Half-Life 2's art director: he principally designed City 17, a decaying Eastern European city occupied by the Combine alien empire, featuring Soviet-era Brutalist buildings and panopticon-like alien structures that embodied a surveillance state.
At Arkane Studios, Antonov worked on Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (2006) and Dishonored (2012), designing the latter's labyrinthine dystopian city of Dunwall with steampunk Victorian and Gothic architecture. He also directed Team Fortress 2 (2007) temporarily at Valve. Later roles on ZeniMax Media titles included Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014), Fallout 4 (2015), Doom (2016), Dishonored 2 (2016), The Elder Scrolls: Legends (2017), and Prey (2017). A 2017 Vice profile noted he "has created disturbing, memorable, and unique worlds" conjuring "cyberpunk metropolises and grim London alleyways".
As a screenwriter and Aquarius, Antonov brought visionary detachment to claustrophobic, architecturally precise spaces. City 17 and Dunwall remain considered among the finest worlds ever made for video games. He died 7 February 2025.
