In the ensuing national debate on gun politics, Mikac became a prominent advocate for stricter gun laws. He co-founded The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to support children affected by violent crime; Queen Mary of Denmark serves as patron. Mikac has authored two books: *To Have And To Hold* and *The Circle of Life: Replacing Hardship with Love*, both drawing on his experience navigating grief and tragedy. He works as a motivational speaker. In 2000, he married sports journalist Kim Sporton; they had a daughter, Isabella, in 2001 and later separated.
