After release from juvenile detention, he launched his music career on SoundCloud in 2013, experimenting with distortion and guitar-backed beats inspired by third-wave emo and grunge.
In 2014, Onfroy founded the underground collective Members Only, quickly becoming a fixture in the trap and lo-fi scene. His 2016 single "Look at Me!" brought mainstream attention. His debut album 17 (2017) peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, while his second, ? (2018), debuted at number one; both earned triple platinum RIAA certifications. The album's lead single "Sad!" posthumously reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and accumulated 1.2 billion YouTube views and 2.1 billion Spotify streams by February 2024, earning diamond RIAA certification in August 2021.
Onfroy faced significant legal controversies throughout his life, including battery charges in 2016, which shaped public perception of his legacy. On June 18, 2018, he was shot and killed near a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida, at age 20; four suspects were arrested, and three were convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole in April 2023. As a singer and rapper, Onfroy explored emo, trap, trap metal, nu metal, indie rock, lo-fi, hip-hop, R&B, and punk rock.
