Rowan Marc Joffé is a British screenwriter and director born in 1973. Son of director Roland Joffé and actress Jane Lapotaire, half-brother of actress Nathalie Lunghi, he began writing plays at university and earned a Cameron Mackintosh bursary. His early screenplays Last Resort and Gas Attack both won the Best New British Feature Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival—a rare double strike that established him as a rising craft voice in British film.
His television work deepened his reputation. Turkish Delight (2003), a drama about a bored housewife who takes up belly dancing, won the Royal Television Society's Best Drama Award (Midland). He then directed The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall, a single drama that won the Best Single Drama Award at the 2009 BAFTA TV Awards.
Joffé's transition to feature film came with his own adaptation of Graham Greene's Brighton Rock (2009), which relocated the novel's setting to the 1960s. In 2010, he wrote the screenplay adaptation of Martin Booth's A Very Private Gentleman, directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George Clooney; the film was retitled The American.
