Tina Satter

Tina Satter is a playwright and theater director whose work interrogates gender, sexuality, adolescence, and sports through formally inventive, visually demanding stage pieces. Born in 1974 in the US, she founded Half Straddle in 2008 and served as its artistic director, creating 10 shows that toured over 20 countries across the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Half Straddle received an Obie Award grant in 2013.

Satter's accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2020), a Pew Fellowship (2019), a Doris Duke Artist Impact Award (2014), and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists award (2016). Ben Brantley of the New York Times praised her as "a genre-and-gender-bending, visually exacting stage artist who has developed an ardent following among downtown aesthetes with a taste for acidic eye candy and erotic enigmas". She made her Off Broadway debut in fall 2019 as conceiver and director of Is This a Room at the Vineyard Theatre. In 2023, she wrote and directed the film Reality, a Peabody Award winner depicting the FBI interrogation of whistleblower Reality Winner in 2017.

She published a collection of three plays—Seagull (Thinking of You), with Away Uniform and Family—in 2014, and the text for Ghost Rings in 2017 alongside a vinyl album of the show's songs.
