Thuy Trang was a Vietnamese actress based in the United States, born December 14, 1973. She became known for portraying Trini Kwan, the first Yellow Ranger, on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, appearing in 80 episodes from 1993 to 1994 that covered the entire first season and the first twenty episodes of the second. She was selected after auditioning against approximately 500 actresses. Trang performed many of her own stunts on set, sustaining repeated injuries. Like other cast members, she portrayed her character primarily in non-uniform scenes; in-costume action was adapted from the Japanese series Super Sentai with her voice dubbed over. She departed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers mid-second season alongside Austin St. John and Walter Emanuel Jones over contractual and payment disputes, replaced by Karan Ashley as Yellow Ranger Aisha Campbell. After leaving the show, Trang had a brief appearance in the film Spy Hard and played a lead villain in The Crow: City of Angels, both released in 1996. She had planned collaborations with St. John and Jones that never materialized. Trang died in a car crash at age 27. As a Sagittarius born in late 1973, she embodied the archer's directness. Thuy Trang's father, a South Vietnamese army officer, fled the country in 1975 after the fall of Saigon, leaving his family behind. When Trang was six, she, her mother, and brothers boarded a cargo ship to Hong Kong in a perilous journey during which she became severely ill. They reunited with her father in the United States in 1980 and settled in California. She enrolled at the University of California, Irvine to study civil engineering, but switched to acting after a talent scout discovered her. She was then chosen for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, her first major role.
